I've even thought about external hard drives in safety deposit boxes, for example, but it would be more trouble than I want to make sure I have everything backed up and to manage versioning. Is that still a viable alternative? Should I consider trying anything else? Carbonite plus (which has external USB support)? I'm open to all ideas. I've heard various complaints about Crashplan including higher resource usage and slower transfer speeds (how slow?), but it's more important to me if a product is reliable and just works. This has been much for uploading new files compared to Dropbox, or in the case of files already uploaded, if it were checking file name and date as the first thing before analyzing further to decide whether a file is a new version and needs to be uploaded. But even though sometimes the upload speeds can spike to the 50-100 Mbps my connection is capable of, its client seems to not be well optimized and upload speed goes up and down based on how much time it takes the client to run through the files. I decided to try Backblaze because the feature set seemed to meet my needs, and I also would plan to pay extra for the 1 year version retention.

Of course, reliability is the most basic thing that the service should provide, and some of the reports about data loss with Backblaze and things not really being backed up are worrisome. I want external USB drive support and prefer retention of at least 1 year of file versions. I would prefer a service which doesn't charge $/GB since I know that would make me pick and choose what I want to backup, which creates the risk of losing something I forget to select. I already have local backups of many of these files, but want something offsite in the case of a fire or disaster at home. My goal is simple: backup my entire daily use computer and some external drives with photos and videos. I am having trouble trying out Backblaze, with frequent pauses of my initial upload for no clear reason that I haven't been able to resolve yet with my Backblaze support ticket and on Reddit.
